Grant Spotlight: ATOM Hacker House Barcelona 2024

Atom Accelerator DAO (AADAO) strives to support innovative solutions for driving further Cosmos Hub awareness across the globe. One of the latest grantees, Web3 Family, will do exactly that in Barcelona with a special AADAO grant.

ATOM Hacker House Barcelona 2024 will be a 7 day dedicated space for developers, builders, and blockchain enthusiasts to collaborate, innovate, and drive the advancement of the ATOM Economic Zone (AEZ) ecosystem.

This week-long event will offer a dynamic mix of coworking, networking, workshops, talks, panels, and hacking, all aimed at fostering growth and collaboration within the AEZ community. The first five days will feature 20+ workshops, talks, and panels to familiarize participants with Cosmos Hub technology, followed by two days dedicated entirely to the hackathon.

Web3 Family 🤝 AADAO

This event is presented by Web3 Family, a large crypto natives’ in-person community in Barcelona.

In just over two years, Web3 Family has hosted more than 50 events, including its flagship annual conference Web3FC.xyz. These events combined a total of 2,000+ past attendees and featured 100+ speakers of 70+ projects such as Ethereum Foundation, Celestia, Solana, Binary Builders, Gnosis, ZKsync, and Arbitrum.

Barcelona has emerged as the country’s crypto capital and boasts by far the most active in-person blockchain community in Spain. Thousands of web3 professionals call the Catalan capital home, with several crypto meetups happening weekly and over 10 major blockchain conferences hosted in the past two years alone. Web3 Family has been a key driver of this transformation, elevating numerous individuals and projects by providing visibility, fostering collaborations, and supporting growth.

Awareness, understanding, and adoption of the AEZ ecosystem in Barcelona and Spain are still in their early stages. The number of developers building within the ecosystem, collaboration among its members, and investor support remain unfortunately low.

To address this, AADAO is providing Web3 Family with a $40,000 USDC grant to host a hacker house and hackathon in Barcelona in December 2024, shortly after Cøsmoverse ’24 and DevCon ’24. This grant will help cover the costs of staff, venue, food, and other resources necessary to run the event.

In addition, AADAO is offering support on multiple fronts, including introductions to potential sponsors, prize providers, speakers, workshop facilitators, and key ecosystem players. This invaluable assistance will ease Web3 Family’s efforts and ensure alignment with the goals agreed upon with AADAO.

Increasing Awareness And Fostering Innovation

Our goal is to attract 100+ unique daily visitors to the hacker house and 100+ participants for the hackathon, with 90% of them being new to the Cosmos Hub. The first five days will serve as a bootcamp to familiarize attendees with the technology, followed by a two-day hackathon to put their new skills into practice.

This event is aimed at tech professionals, including CTOs, developers, engineers, architects, and researchers. Web3 Family will tap into its network of over 2,000 past attendees and collaborate with local organizations, such as tech universities, to attract participants.

The venue offers a range of amenities, including audio-visual equipment, coworking tables and chairs, a spacious open area, several private rooms, a kitchen, a shower, and more.

In addition, we are collaborating with the Giveth House to provide free accommodation for selected hacker house participants. Giveth House, established in 2017, is a versatile space serving as a home, coliving, coworking, and hackerspace that supports both the local and global grassroots crypto communities. It is part of the larger Giveth project.

ATOM Hacker House Barcelona also aims to attract Cosmos-related speakers and facilitators to lead talks and workshops, as well as Cosmos-related projects to provide DevRels, mentors, and judges. We are already in discussions with several teams, including Cosmos Hub, Informal Systems, IBC, Binary Builders, Neutron, and Confio/CosmWasm.

Topics covered will include:

  • Launch a smart contract on Neutron
  • Explainer on ICS partial set security
  • Deploy a new chain on Interchain Security

Zooming out on our mid-to-long term goals:

  • Increase the number of developers building on the AEZ ecosystem.
  • Foster collaboration among AEZ builders.
  • Attract investors to support AEZ projects.
  • Establish an organic local AEZ ‘builder-culture’ in Barcelona.
  • Get one of the hacks to become a fully fledged project on Neutron

Key Takeaways

This grant will enable Web3 Family to expand the local Cosmos Hub developer ecosystem, foster new collaborations as well as the launch of innovative projects within the Atom Economic Zone.
